What are online chatrooms?

In short, an online chat room is a virtual meeting place where you can engage in some random chat with strangers. It's a lot like going to a nightclub or bar only less costly. Plus, you don't risk looking like a fool on the dance floor or risk getting stiffed with the bar tab. It is not a place to hang around if you have no intentions of getting involved. While 'lurking' is common online, a chat room is meant to be used and in order for that to happen everyone in the room has to communicate with each other through text messages.

Joining chatrooms

When you are entering a chat room, you should always greet everyone whether you know them or not. Be sure to wait until there is a lull in any conversation already in progress, though. Do not interrupt. When someone else enters the room, you should make it a point to at least recognize their presence and greet them. If you wish to kindly join the ongoing conversation, please do so respectfully by putting forth your own viewpoint or stating facts regarding the subject.

Leaving chatrooms

When you are about to leave a chatroom, be polite and say goodbye to let everyone know you are not going to stay anymore.

If you have spent any time on social media platforms you will already know the reason why chatting, posting or doing anything in just CAPS is a bad thing. If you have no idea what we are getting at here, this will be a good lesson for you. When you type any kind of message online in capital letters it looks as if you are yelling. Unless you happen to be yelling at your computer that has voice recognition and translates your voice to text, avoid this at all costs. To the rest of the people in the chat room, your ALL CAPS conversation comes across as being rude. Now, if your evil plan is to come across as a bit on the obnoxious side, ALL CAPS will help you nail it.

How to stay safe in online chatrooms?

Please be careful when interacting with people in this chatroom. Always use common sense.

NEVER SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION with anybody online, or any of your personal data, such as credit card numbers, street address, telephone number etc. Sigma! Chat doesn't take responsibility for any damage or harm that may be caused by you sharing your personal information to anybody here. You are solely responsible for your own actions online, and it is assumed that you are under the control of your own actions.

Spamming messages isn't nice

At times, you might be tempted to just mindlessly smash the keyboard for a prolonged amount of time, and spam same message, giving everyone else a bad experience. We encourage you not to do this, as it isn't nice to give everyone else a hard time because something might be bothering you.

If someone is being dense enough, we recommend you use the 'Block user' functionality. That way, his messages will not be visible anymore for you. Problem solved.

Bashing an individual

Do not verbally abuse, attack, embarrass, or threaten anyone else in the chat room, no matter what they might say to you. DO NOT personally attack someone based on his/hers race, gender, age, or any other subject! Please be kind and act nicely to every participant in the chat.

Do not use obscene, offensive, or sexually explicit language. You would not use this kind of language in a face to face classroom so do not do it in an online environment.
